Performance Medicine
A Revolutionising Sports Medicine Platform
Overview
As part of my role in Performance Medicine, I led a groundbreaking platform design revolutionising sports medicine, taking an industry using out dated hospital EMRs and creating a platform built around their needs specifically within sports.
Dedicated Research with Leading Sports Organisations
Over a dedicated period of four months, and continuing more infrequently for the next two years, I conducted extensive research with esteemed sports organisations, including Chelsea Football Club, the IRFU, and the NFL. This research involved in-depth interviews with over 60 practitioners, user testing, and gathering valuable insights directly from doctors, athletic trainers, physiotherapists, psychiatrists, and nutritionists among others. After each interview the notes were studied and any key points or quotes were pulled into a Notion database that I designed to be able to be filtered by theme, user role, sport, or organisation. By the end of this process there were over 1000 nuggets of information in this database which was used to inform and determine the features which followed.
On-Site Visits for User Understanding
To gain a deeper understanding of our users, I personally attended on-site visits with teams such as the New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, Miami Dolphins, Chelsea FC, and others, as well as with leagues such as the NFL and Premier League. This allowed me to observe their workflow, challenges, and requirements firsthand, enabling me to design a platform tailored to their specific needs. In addition, I was able to test different designs at early stages during these on-sites as well as during the NFL combine and other NFL and Premier League summits. Carrying out testing during on-sites as well as the follow up testing at the Combine allowed myself and my team to gain trust from these athletic trainers as they were able to see their feedback being implemented which built a good working relationship for the rest of Kitman Labs to leverage.
Leading the Design Function
Throughout this project, I had the privilege of leading the entire design function within Performance Medicine. This involved overseeing a team of three other designers, ensuring alignment, collaboration, and effective communication. Together, we worked tirelessly to translate user insights into innovative design solutions. As the lead designer I also ensured that design was at the heart of all product decisions and worked with my colleagues in product management and engineering on our product roadmap and strategy.
